This is utterly HILARIOUS! Everytime I think about it, I just laugh. Everyone is up in arms over
Kanye West's rant on racial inequity and blast of President Bush on
NBC's telethon on Friday. Not only did he deviate from the script on one occasion, but on three separate occasions!
I hate the way they portray us in the media. You see a black family and they say we are looting, you see a white family and they say they are looking for food. And, you know, its been five days because most of the people ARE black. And even for me to complain, I would be a hypocrite because I would turn away from the TV because it's too hard to watch. I've even been shopping before even giving a donation, so now I'm calling my business manager right to see what is the biggest amount I can give. And just to imagine, if I was down there and those are my people down there. If there is anybody out there that wants to do anything that we can help about the way America is set up the help the poor, the black people, the less well off as slow as possible. Red cross is doing as much as they can. We already realize a lot of the people that could help are at war right now, fighting another way. And now they've given them permission to go down and shoot us. George Bush doesn't care about black people. Please call...
Kanye's Shakespearean monologue as cut immediately after his statement about Bush (WOO HOO HEEELLLLLLOOOOO censorship, how ya been!?) . This trips me out, because this is getting
so much press and a majority of
white Americans are up in arms. Let me see if I can try to shed some light on this situation.
To White Americans, they see no color-- they see poor people getting raped in a crowded sporting event arena, snipers on the roof shooting at helicopters and hospital inhabitants, they see the eldery dying in shopping carts wrapped up in a child's blanket, children crying and screaming from hunger pains.
Black Americans, we see the same thing-- but we see Aunt Jackie trying to get food for her kids, so she has no choice but to "loot" the local convenient store for formula bottles and pampers. We see Uncle Ray who is a diabetic and whose legs are weak, but is sure to die cold, hungry and alone if he doesn't get any help. We see little Damian who is hungry and with tears running down his eyes, hiding his face in his mothers lap.
Now, this isn't the first time we've seen images like this. Black Americans have been second class citizens since this country was built with sweat of their brow and the breaking of their back. We have always been last in line to get the smallest pay and the shortest amount of supplies. So when the media sees something-- they don't see the sheer humanity and utter primitive nature of trying to survive, they see a sensational story-- something to give them an emmy. Although some do capture the raw emotion in an honest and unbiased medium, a majority of the time the damage has already been done.
But back to Kanye. So now the Red cross and NBC issue statements to distance themsleves as far as possible from Kanye and his statements. Hell, even Mike Myers has that, "WTF are you doing look" on his face. Again, Kanye wasn't saying anything that I know I hear black people talking about since this whole thing began. Hell, where
are all the white folx in NO? Why is it that when the white family is rummaging through a store for supplies, we choke back tears and stand high with resolve? Yet when the media portrays the black people doing the same "survival looting", they manage to show them carting out TVs, DVD players, etc. The rest of the world shakes an ominous finger in disgust and disbelief. In the little bit of time that other affected areas get, for example in Mississippi, we see white victims lined up quietly, gratefully and humbly on the side of at trailer. In the sesspool of NO, we see blacks going through the garbage, leaving stores with arms full of items. Why are we portrayed so poorly?
I am not a supporter of theft, burglary, rape or violence. But this could have happened anywhere, to anyone at anytime. NO had fallen to mob rule-- it was just a matter of time before the criminals came out and tried to captalize on an already destitute situation. That's what the dregs of socieities do-- they didn't just start that since the hurricane came. And it's true, Katrina, wasn't a racist. She didn't choose to devastate
only black people. She landed on several other areas-- the one of primary focus happened to be a city mainly inhabited by blacks. So that is how it becomes a color issue. Don't you think the victims are thinking or have been saying, "If we were white, would they have come sooner?"
Everyone keeps saying that there
was no immediate relief. That help couldn't have come during the storm or immediately after. How shameful that is! Ask NYC how many police officers and firefighters they lost when the towers came down. They were right in the middle of it. But again, this is just another show of poor preparation on the behalf of NO government and sorry ass support from the federal government.
But again, back to Kanye. So now, everyone is disgusted. They feel that he took away from the real purpose of the show-- to help the victims. I agree, it was in poor taste to do it during the telethon. However, what a statement it makes to do it on LIVE television when you
know the whole world is watching? I'm sure some victims and other black citizens let out a big "You go, boy!" for someone finally understanding and stating their plight. Some people have said, "You don't know how many people would have given, but possibly offended, had he not said that". Then they are bigger hypocrites than the government officials who should have handled this mess. If what one person says can make you
not want to give to over hundreds of thousands of people who need assistance, you're the bastard.
Then there are those who want him to apologize, they want to write his publicist, record companies, etc. Get a fucking grip. Instead, why don't you write your President, George Bush, or Louisiana's governor, Kathleen Blanco, or New Orleans' mayor, Nagin and tell
them how disgusted you are over their poor preparation and support for Louisiana's citizens. Those of you who want to be mad, be mad at that. Don't get mad at a man who exercised his freedom of speech to tell the world what it looks like from a black citizen's point of view. Really, who asked us? Don't get mad at the man for bringing America's dirty laundry to the forefront and hide behind the "it's not racial" cloak.
Last week,
Pat Robertson said that we should assassinate President Chavez of Venezuela because it would be "cheaper than starting a war". This asshat influences many people through his television show,
The 700 Club, and he flies off the handle and says something as violent and careless as this. However, in his next breath, he will talk about love, curse Muslim extremism, etc. Newsflash-- there are Christian Extremists too, Patty! Look at those who bomb abortion clinics in the name of God? How about that for homegrown terrorism.
Some how, America can glide over Robertson's comments and almost forgive them unconsciously. After all, he
feels he's saying what's on everyone else's mind-- so why can't Kanye. Even after his feeble attempt of an
explanation, Robertson is still in the running for
Gimp of the Week. What a herb.
